Tosca is one of the great operatic experiences and from its strident initial chords evokes a world of political instability and threat.
Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. The police chief, Scarpia - one of the most evil villains in the history of opera - pursues and relentlessly tortures the enemies of the state. His dark and demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion through sublime arias, such as "Vissi d'arte" and "E lucevan le stelle". The dramatic work of Giacomo Puccini was a great public success at its premiere in 1900 and is still one of the most represented operas
This appealing production highlights the drama desperately intense while the tension is increasing towards a fateful conclusion. Puccini's meticulously studied score is impregnated with identical authentic details, from the distant cannons during the Te Deum of Act I to the chiming of church bells and the sounds of a firing squad.
