Las Salinas de Calpe are a natural place that welcomes, at various times of the year, a large number of migratory birds, especially flamingos.
The Salinas - Salt Flats are an interesting spot close to the Penon de Ifach.
In the 19th & 20th century, the salt flats were important to Calpe. The salt marshes and fishing were key to the economy of the town.
Every year, a campaign is held to clean up the Salinas. With the wetlands lying close to busy roads a lot of rubbish collects in vegetation around the Salinas. Last year 40 volunteers helped clean up the Salinas, collecting in total over 1,000 kilos of waste.
