New Coalition Team of Government in Calpe

Monday 25th July
It’s now 6 weeks since Cesar Sanchez became Mayor of Calpe, leading his coalition government team comprising 9 councillors from the Partido Popular and 2 councillors from Calpe Independientes. The initial focus has been on understanding the current economic situation in the Town Hall, which is "dramatic", with a debt of some 54 million euros. Additionally there has been no approved budget for the town since 2007.  At the Council meeting last Friday, the 2011 budget was finally approved. Although this budget was drafted by the previous administration, the Mayor said that it was important to ratify it as it was "unsustainable and irresponsible" to continue without one. The new team is now working on a budget for 2012 which better reflects the real situation in Calpe, with a focus on austerity while maintaining essential social services.

The Mayor commented "I can say that I am proud of the whole government team, we are working in a pragmatic and serious way. The economic situation of the town hall is dramatic and we can’t do everything straight away, but we will get there. We are working to improve Calpe. We are improving Calpe for you."
