Children´s Charity Golf Day Javea Golf Club - 15 June

The Inaugural Emaus Children´s Charity Shield put itself firmly on the map and onto the golfing calendar when 144 golfers lined up to compete for the trophy and raise funds for children in the care of the Emaus charity. The event had been organised by Emaus stalwart Tony Grande who has worked tirelessly for the charity for many years, raising money and awareness to improve the lives of children and babies in the 12 Emaus homes on the Costa Blanca.

Sponsored and supported by Bay Radio, Spain´s top English radio station, hundreds of people turned up to the event to spend the day in the beautiful surroundings of the Javea Golf Club.

As usual, local business dug deep and supported the event with both time and money.

Wayne Warner of the BBQ shop in Calpe kept the visitors happily fed throughout the day and also donated a top of the range gas barbeque to the raffle, while the food that was being cooked had been provided by the Union Jack Bar in Benidorm and leading distributor, Kings Food. Limelight Productions did a fantastic job with the lighting and staging of the event.

Those relaxing on the terraces on a hot June day were entertained with dances from the ladies of the Costa Blanca Line Dancers while the men´s temperatures were raised still further when the Costa Blanca Zumba dancers hit the stage. There were over 50 stalls in the Emaus Summer Fête all adding to the great atmosphere as well as to the funds raised.

The fun moved on into the evening when music legend Jeff Britton formerly of Paul McCartney & Wings and Manfred Mann´s Earth Band brought his band Black Glitter to the show. An entertainment casino complete with authentic roulette and blackjack tables, manned by professional croupiers proved to be a highlight and added a considerable amount to the total raised.

This was an official Emaus event and was attended by the charities President, Montserrat Fiter who took time out to talk to the radio and television that were there. She said, ´´I am absolutely thrilled, this has been an incredible day not only because of the money raised but for the attention that it has brought to the Emaus Charity. Tony Grande has, as usual, done an amazing job for us and we really don´t know what we would do without him. I would also like to thank Bay Radio and its listeners who have done so much to support us. ``

Indeed, there were many more unsung heroes behind the scenes not least Roy McGillivray, his son Simon and Chris Green of the innovative website, adhub.es. They not only donated a very generous amount of money on the day but have also committed ten percent of all future income from their business to Emaus.

The Charity Shield itself was won by Letica Ras-Andérica and her husband John of The Javea Golf Club, who had the honour of holding the trophy aloft for the very first time.

But the final word should go to Mr Tony Grande. ´´I would just like to thank everyone who helped us to make this such a massive success, in particular Magpie, the charity co-ordinator at Bay Radio, who worked so hard with us every step of the way. The people at Javea Golf Club have been amazing and I must say a special thanks to Ian White for everything he has done.  We raised an amazing sum of 12236.00€ on the day,  supplying the baby unit with milk and nappies for 6 months, providing a much needed face operation for a little girl, providing children, who cannot be placed with a family, places in a summer camp and much, much more. But it does not end here. These children need our help on an ongoing basis. So, with the help of the community, we will continue to raise money and awareness and try to help these children as much as we can. ``
