Visiting Moraira Castle
Moraira Castle, known as “Castillo de Moraira,” is a small fortress located on the coast of Moraira, Costa Blanca.

Moraira Castle is a popular tourist spot, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the nearby beaches, such as Playa de Playa de l’Ampolla.

It was built in the 18th century as part of the region’s defense system against pirate raids that were common along the Mediterranean

The castle was restored at the beginning of the 80s, after the original structure needed to be demolished.

The castle has a unique horseshoe or semicircular shape facing the sea, designed to maximize its defensive capabilities. Its thick walls are constructed from local limestone and are punctuated by small openings for cannons, which were used to defend the area from invaders arriving by sea.

Though it is a relatively modest structure compared to larger castles or fortresses, it holds historical significance as a symbol of the region’s efforts to protect its coastal settlements.

The castle’s floorplan is built in the shape of a pezuña de buey, translated as ‘ox hoof’. The semi-circular façade faces south and the only gate is located on its north side, where you can see the royal coat of arms of the Bourbons.

Opposite the gate there is a small chapel would have originally resided inside the castle. A couple of metres from here there is a water well, which would have provided the inhabitants of the castle with water.

Moraira castle is currently home to an audio-visual museum about the sea and piracy, as well as a permanent exhibition about the surveillance towers and piracy in the Mediterranean, offering information in several languages.
