Navy League of the United States Description:

The Navy League of the United States - Levante Council

The Navy League of the United States, Levante Council, is part of a worldwide non-profit association, formed to offer assistance and hospitality to the service men and women of the United States and NATO Alliance. The Levante Council, covering the Costa Blanca from Alicante to Valencia, has a membership of around one hundred mainly American and British, but also including members from Holland, Belgium, France and Germany.

A luncheon meeting is held every month with special emphasis on the American holidays of Independence Day (4th July) and Thanksgiving Day (4tyh Thursday in November) with food typical of these celebrations. On Independence Day, a picnic style buffet is enjoyed while on Thanksgiving Day there's a whole roast turkey on every table. Our Council is always delighted to offer hospitality to military personnel who are visiting or are based in Spain such as when a naval vessel is in port in Alicante or Valencia. At those times a reception is organized either in the form of a garden party at the home of one of the members or lunch at a local restaurant. All members involve themselves entusiastically in these activities which are much appreciated by the military personnel, most of whom will have been at sea for many months. In past years, we in the Levante Council have been pleased to host receptions for officers of both British and American ships, such as HMS Montrose and the USS Mitscher, and look forward to welcoming vessels from other members of the Alliance.

In addition, regular donations are made to the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society. The organization, which has an office at Rota, in southern Spain, exists to help the families of serving members of the armed forces, who are in urgent need of financial assistance, and makes no deuctions for administrative costs.

The NLUS has more than 60,000 members worldwide, none of whom are serving members of the armed forces of the United States or NATO Alliance members. There are many NLUS Councils in Spain and most European countries as well as Great Britain. The Levante Council is proud to be the largest council in Europe, and we look forward to welcoming new members.

Registered in Alicante and Calpe for the Costa Blanca area, the Levante Council of the Navy League of the United States covers the Costa Blanca of Spain from Alicante to Valencia and was chartered in 1981 at a time when the Sixth Fleet was prominent in the Mediterranean. In those days, telephones were scarce and money exchange difficult so the services provided by the Levante Council were much appreciated by visiting military personnel. Through the years, the Levante Council members have entertained and assisted numerous men and women of the United States and other services from the lowest ranks to Admirals. We have met and hopefully helped military personnel from the Armed Forces of many countries, including those stationed at the NATO base in Betera, and, most recently, those serving on HMS Montrose and USS Mitscher. The latest event was when the USS San Jacinto docked in Alicante on Wednesday 28 July for a short stay after seven months at sea during which time they were involved in disrupting piracy off the Somali coast.
Word went out to the USS San Jacinto that the NLUS Levante Council would be delighted to host a reception for the ship. Word came back that they would be
delighted to attend but a community relations project was also requested. After talking with several charities, it was determined that the Emaus house in Elche
was in need of help with their facility. So earlier on the same day as the NLUS Levante Council reception, the Chaplain mustered 20 plus crew, including the Captain, and went along to the home to decorate some of their 28 rooms. This facility houses protected children: children from the streets or broken homes or those who have been taken from drug addicted or violent parents. There are many associations in our area that assist these children, including the many Lions groups, and now the U.S.Navy can be counted among those assisting those in need along the Costa Blanca. How proud are we of these men and women in the armed forces!
That same evening, fifteen of the officers, including Captain John Cordel, Commander Mark Breeden, and Chaplain Jim Goebel, were invited to a reception at
the lovely home of Judith Lewis where about 40 Levante Council members offered a plethora of marvellous food, drink and music... Judging by
the smiles and laughter, a good time was had by all.
Working with Arcos de Altea, we arranged for 17 children, 3 carers and the director from the Elche Emaus house to visit the USS San Jacinto. The children range in age from 7 to 16 and it was a joy to see how much they enjoyed touring the ship, chatting with the seamen, checking out the captain’s chair and even
the captain’s hat. Then there was a special treat as they were taken to the wardroom where milk, cookies and other goodies were served to all. When the
children checked out , the NLUS Levante Council members checked in after having had a complete tour of the ship. The Wardroom team produced yet another table
full of tempting treats and a most welcome coffee or cold drink as we chatted with the Officers about the ship and their adventures at sea. I presented the Captain with a photo of the entire group present at the reception held the night before, while the Levante Council were privileged to receive a plaque from the USS San Jacinto. It once again enforces the belief that the NLUS Levante Council has an important role to play in our communities.
The Levante Council has continuously maintained the largest NLUS membership in Europe with an average of 100 members and will soon be celebrating its 30th Anniversary. English is the language of the Council although we have members of all nationalities, including British, Dutch, Belgium, French and German, and, of course, American.
