Calpe & Benissa Lions Beat the Weather (10/05/10)
After the torrential rain storm which swept across the region on Monday, it looked as though the Calpe and Benissa Lions Club might have to postpone their annual Tea Party in the Gardens of Marnes. But, thanks to the amazing efforts of Christine Lomer and Nick Brown, the owners of the Garden, channels were dug, ditches cleared and the flood waters dispersed before the first visitors arrived on Thursday. Over three hundred and fifty guests enjoyed the scenic drive to Marnes, which is situated in the hills above Benissa and as they entered the garden, they were greeted by a carpet of iris in full bloom and in every colour possible. After a gentle walk in the sunshine, everybody enjoyed a cup of tea and delicious homemade cakes. And the result? Over €2700 were raised which the Lions will use to buy essential food and clothing which will be distributed to those most in need by the Caritas branches in Calpe and Benissa. For anybody who missed the event, the gardens will be open to the public until the end of May ( information at iris-lomer.com ) and those planning their next outing with the Calpe and Benissa Lions Club should be booking their seat at the Fashion Show and Luncheon at Restaurante Puerto Blanco on 17 May, when Boutique Carol and the girls will show a selection of glamorous summer outfits by well know designers including Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman, Pause Cafe and Adini (Information and tickets on 96 583 4852). |
